Obituary

Arthur (Art) Robertson, 77, of Little River, South Carolina, passed away suddenly on February 17, 2026.  He leaves behind his wife Sue; daughter Kathy; daughter-in-law Erin, absolutely adored grandchildren Hailey and Jackson; granddogs Nero and Kira; and countless friends and relatives.  His loved ones that went before him include his much-loved son Jim , three beloved brothers and brother-in-law, parents, and many friends.

Art was born and grew up in Elmira, New York, the third of seven boisterous children, before travels took him around the world and eventually home to the beach.  After high school, Art joined the U.S. Navy, and that service was a pride of his life.  His assignments ranged from Pensacola, Florida, to Adak, Alaska (Aleutian Islands), before landing him in Wiesbaden, Germany, where he met his wife Sue (thank you, Oktoberfest).  He and Sue dated over good beer, better friends, and weekend jaunts around Europe.  They married as soon as they returned to the U.S.

After several years in central New York, Art and Sue needed another adventure and moved to Michigan, pretty much sight-unseen.  Art taught at Saginaw Valley State University, before they both enrolled at Michigan State (Go Spartans!).  Kathy was born at MSU, which really leveled up Art's multi-tasking skills.  Jim was born after Art's first job took the family to Traverse City with Amoco.

After years of two-story snow forts, six-week summers, and frolicking in snow and sand dunes, Art became the first to move his family to the Finger Lakes in search of less snow.  There, Art made lifelong friends at BorgWarner, where he worked until retirement.  Even after retirement, Art remained close to several friends he met there, and nurtured a love for American cars, especially Mustangs, for the rest of his life.  (Kathy thanks BorgWarner for the fantastic scholarship and for employing her and Jim for several memorable school breaks.)

In retirement, Art indulged myriad hobbies that were unavailable while attending every one of his kids' sports games, school awards shows, and terrible choral concerts, including golf, model trains, and music.  He burst with pride at seeing Hailey's burgeoning trumpet skills and loved sharing his model trains and cars with Jackson.  He was so happy to share milkshakes on the beach with his grandchildren.  In both New York and South Carolina, his golfing friends were also a major joy after falling in love with the game through vacations with friends and family to Myrtle Beach throughout his life.

Art had an unexpected but gratifying last professional chapter at Lowe's, where he officially worked in plumbing but actually worked anywhere he was needed.  A naturally social person, he loved talking to fellow employees, customers, and especially the little old ladies that thought he was cute.

For the second half of his life, Art struggled with cardiovascular health and after a major event, he and Sue took their second chance and moved to the beach like they'd always dreamed.  If you get a second chance like that, Art would urge you to take it.

In lieu of flowers, Art's family requests that you reach out to Sue, his cherished wife of 54 years, long after everyone goes home, and to teach Hailey and Jackson to golf, travel, and not to root for Ohio State.  Art also loved animals and supported the Horry County SPCA in honor of a lifetime of excellent, slightly used dogs that brought him immense joy, frustration, and laughter (some were smarter than others).
