Obituary

Betty Marie Waymire (née Newquist), 89, passed away peacefully on August 11, 2025, in Pawleys Island, South Carolina.

Born on December 12, 1935, in Lexington, Nebraska, Betty's early years were marked by love, faith, and family. Shortly after her birth, she moved with her parents to Chicago, Illinois, where her father began seminary studies to become a Presbyterian minister. In 1942, the family settled in Primrose, Nebraska, where Betty welcomed the arrival of her three younger brothers and experienced the joy of growing up in a close-knit community under the guidance of her father's thriving ministry.

Betty attended Primrose High School, where she met the love of her life, Willis "Buzz" Waymire. After graduation, she pursued higher education at Hastings University in Hastings, Nebraska. In 1955, following Buzz's enlistment in the U.S. Navy, the couple became engaged. Betty moved to Washington, D.C., where she lived and worked in a clerical position at an insurance company, while Buzz was stationed nearby.

They married in February 1957 and began a life of adventure and service. Their journey took them to Alexandria, VA, where they welcomed their first child, Becky Jo, in November 1957. Two years later, their son Gary was born in Berkeley, California, followed by their youngest, Brian, born in 1962 on Naval Base Guam. In 1965, the family made their permanent home in Woodbridge, Virginia, where Betty embraced her roles as a devoted wife, loving mother, and caring homemaker.

As her children grew older, Betty returned to the workforce, working in a local middle school cafeteria, bringing her warmth and joy to students each day. In 1980, Betty and Buzz retired to the mountains of Stanley, Virginia, where they designed and built their dream home. Never one to stay idle, Betty worked part-time as a seamstress at a neighborhood dry cleaner.

Betty and Buzz shared a love for travel and were frequent visitors to family in the Midwest and California. Their adventures took them to places like Branson, Missouri, and on many memorable cruises to tropical destinations.

A woman of many talents and boundless creativity, Betty found great joy in sewing, needlework, crafting, and completing jigsaw puzzles. She was known for her handmade greeting cards, which she lovingly sent to family and friends for every holiday—always thoughtful, always on time.

Betty spent her final years under the loving care of the staff at Arbor Landing at Pawleys, a senior living community.

Betty is survived by her sons, Gary (Dawn) Waymire and Brian (Laura Moore) Waymire; her brothers, Larry Newquist, Ken (Mary) Newquist, and Dennis (Carla) Newquist; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 56 years, Willis "Buzz" Waymire; her cherished daughter, Becky Jo Grizzle, her sister-in-law Carmen Newquist; and her loving parents.

Betty's passing leaves a profound hole in the hearts of those who loved her. Her kindness, creativity, and unwavering devotion to her family and faith will be remembered always.
