Obituary

Carmen Figueroa born 4/4/1926 died 6/29/2017 born in Yabucoa, Puerto Rico.

She is now at peace, and in Gods loving arms with her beloved dog Ruby.

As a child in Puerto Rico she lost her mom at birth. Her grandmother who wore a long black skirts all the time - like in Spain an Italy.. She lost her grand mother and was sent to live with her Mothers Brother. They had many children and she became the leader of the house. Cooked, cleaned an tended to their children. She ran the house. Learned how to cook at the age of 7 she would get up on a stool. . She helped their mother so that she could make clothes for the children and for anyone who wanted a dress out of a magazine. They would make money for their things. She would help in any way she could an anyone who needed a hand. She remember they made underwear out of Rice bags.

My dear Cousin wrote (My dear cousin Carmen is one of the most important persons in my life. She has always been very compassionate an loving. My mother, my father and all of us adore her. She being a child herself , looked after us, protected us, made us laugh and has always been there for us. I have great memories),

She came to America, New York City in 1949 it took 6 hours on a plane with 2 children. She did not speak English and would point to things she wanted to eat that looked nice in the plate. Somethings she would never order again such as Meat Loaf at the Woolworth counter. It looked nice but not her cup of tea. Life in New York City was hard but she got on the trains, buses and walked. She lived in Chelsea . Manhattan. She worked very hard and the bosses of the business loved her and would help her.

She worked in the garment district for many years. Worked for Valentino's in NYC she met Jacklyn Kennedy and she loved her.She worked cleaning offices in Mahattan at 59 St. and then down town in the wall street area. Mom would say no shame, you get paid for what you do.

She loved her children and would do anything for them. The love of her life her great-grand kids Gabriella Ramos an James Ryan Liney. Her grand children Carlos Ramos an Richard Ramos.

We have all lost a precious flower. As you know she loved plants, lots of them. She loved gardening.

She was loved by everyone. better known as Mami Carmen or Grandma. People always mistaken her for an Italian she would say I am a Puerto Rican.

She was a Yankee fan she would watch the game with her son and later on with her son-in-law. True Yankee die-hards.
