Eugene "Gene" Francis Scherrer, 73, passed from this world on April 3, 2020, in Murrells Inlet, SC.

Born on Dec. 20, 1946, in Manhattan, NY, he was a son of the late William Scherrer and Loretta Schmeider Scherrer.

Gene was an honored veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving as a member of Seal Team One and Underwater Demolition Team Twelve for three tours of duty during the Vietnam War. He was decorated with the Navy Defense Service Medal, the Navy Unit Commendation, Vietnam Service Medal, and Vietnam Campaign Medal, for his valor and service to our country.

Upon discharge from the Navy in 1968, Gene became a New York City firefighter, serving with Engine 17, Ladder 49, Engine 97 and Rescue 3, one of the most elite units in the FDNY. He was disabled on the job and moved to Myrtle Beach, SC, in 1990.

Gene is survived by his loving sons, Michael F. Scherrer of Myrtle Beach and Daniel P. Scherrer of Conway, SC., and granddaughters, Scarlett Ava Scherrer and Elise E. Scherrer of Myrtle Beach.
