Obituary

George Richard Poirier, beloved husband of Rebecca, entered into eternal rest on Saturday, April 29th at the age of 60 after a long valiant fight with lung cancer. He grew up in Enfield, CT and attended local schools: St. Martha's grammar school and Fermi High. He attended Springfield Technical College and earned his bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Vermont.

After graduation, he married his wife, Rebecca Cross Poirier and moved to California to work at Caltrans for 11 years. George was hired by Federal Highways in 1992 and moved to Maine as a Bridge Engineer. He then moved to Wisconsin in 2003 as the Large Project Manager and in 2008 to Connecticut as the Assistant Division Administrator. In 2010, he moved back to Wisconsin and enjoyed the role as Division Administrator until he retired in 2015 due to his fight with lung cancer.

He and his wife moved to Myrtle Beach in April of 2016 to enjoy the warmth of the ocean.

George was a people person who touched the lives of many. He will be truly missed by family and the many friends he made along the way. He leaves his loving wife, Becky, whom he met while walking along the beach in Maine when they were barely teens and reconnected years later when they both attended the University of Vermont. He was a loving father to two sons, Tanner who lives in Madison, Wisconsin and Travis who lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

George was an enthusiastic cook and took pleasure in entertaining. He was the type of guest that couldn't sit idly by when there was a pot to stir or ingredients to chop. George loved life, gardening, the ocean, fishing and playing paintball with his sons. His passion was growing large pumpkins. The Poirier 1290 was known as "the prettiest large pumpkin" in the 2007 Dill seed catalog - a source of pride for George.

George is survived by his loving family, parents, Claire (LeBrun) and George A. Poirier (deceased) and three sisters, Deb and her husband Tom Corbin of Rocky Hill, CT, Denise and her husband Mike Baum of Pomfret, CT, and Sandy and her husband Tony Campbell of Canton, CT along with many nieces and nephews. George enjoyed family and friends who visited often to spend time with him in Myrtle Beach.

The family will have a celebration of life at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in George's name may be made to the Lung Cancer Research Foundation, 155 East 55th Street, Suite 6H, New York, New York, EIN 14-1935776.
