Obituary

Helen "Doreen" Hunter passed away peacefully on February 22, 2024.

Born in Kansas City, Missouri on September 21, 1928 to Canadian parents, the family returned to Ottawa when she was still a toddler and she grew up in Canada, enjoying dual citizenship.  She was a graduate of the Royal Victorian School of Nursing in Montreal, and shortly after graduation, she accepted an adventurous job offer to Mt Edgecumbe Indian Hospital in Sitka, Alaska.  It was there she met and soon after married the love of her life, Earle Hunter with whom she was married to for over 60 years.  Following their ceremony in Seattle, they moved to Chicago so he could complete his degree in optometry.  In 1957, they drove across country for her husband to start practicing in Juneau, Alaska.

Following the birth of their second child, Jim, who was born deaf and with cerebral palsy, they moved to McMinnville, Oregon, where they could get better care and education for him.  They remained in McMinnville until 1973 when they moved to St Louis, Missouri.  She and son Jim moved to Myrtle Beach in 2021 to be closer to daughter Barbara.

Survivors include daughter Barb Hunter and son Jim Hunter, both of Myrtle Beach, SC.  She also left behind 2 grandchildren: James Mahan (Holly) and Sarah Mahan and 2 great-grandchildren (Kallie Speakmon and Jacob Mahan) as well as her niece, Liz Huling and nephew, Jim Beckett.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Earle (2014) and their son, Robert (2003). She was also preceded by her dear sister Elizabeth Jean Beckett (2020) as well as her sister's husband Tom Beckett, parents James and Beatrice Nell (Darwin) Dawson, and stepmother Anna (Kennedy) Dawson.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to either the Hunger Ministry at the Church of St Michael and St George in St Louis or the Alzheimer's Foundation.

A memorial service will be held in St Louis, and she will be interred with her beloved husband at Jefferson Barracks Veteran's Cemetery.
