Jack William Markusen, 80, of Myrtle Beach, SC, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Monday, February 23rd.

Born July 3, 1945, in Chicago, Illinois, he was the son of Ralph William and Eleanor Emma Markusen. Jack proudly served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. He later studied at Wisconsin University, Baptist College of Charleston, and the Medical University of South Carolina.

For nearly 50 years, Jack dedicated his career to caring for the Horry County community through his dental practice, For Your Smile, With a Smile, in Conway and Myrtle Beach. He was the first laser dentist in South Carolina and was active in several professional organizations. His leadership roles included serving as state president of the American Society of Dentistry for Children and as public information officer for the South Carolina chapter of the Academy of General Dentistry.

Jack also gave generously to his community. He served with the Lions Club, including as director of the Lions Eye Bank, and was a member of St. Philip Lutheran Church. He also served on the board of the Coastal Samaritan Counseling Center. A lifelong sports enthusiast, he was a passionate supporter of the South Carolina Gamecocks.

He is survived by his brother, Thomas (Mary) Markusen; his three children, Marcey Berges, Bryan (Erin) Markusen, and Ross Markusen; and three grandchildren, Elyssa Jones, Jo Markusen, and Aidan Markusen.

Honoring Jack's wishes, there will be no formal service. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations in his memory to any of the organizations listed below—each one reflecting causes that were meaningful to him.
