Joel Martin Long of Calabash, NC was promoted to heaven on January 13, 2017 after valiant battle with myasthenia gravis. His devotion to his Lord and care for his family was unfading to the end.
Joel was born on December 19, 1945 in Lansing, MI and was immediately adopted by his nurturing parents, Marion & Agard Long. In 1964, He graduated from Central High School in Kalamazoo, MI. On August 14, 1965, Joel and Janet Sargent were married. God blessed them with three children and over 51 years of marriage.
For much of his life, Joel was employed by Georgia Pacific as a rewinder. He was ultimately promoted to lead operator. His industriousness was marked by many hours of overtime and commitment to provide for his family. Serving his Lord was a passion for Joel. He provided bus and van transportation for children in all four churches where he held membership during adulthood. Joel enjoyed watching NASCAR and tinkering around the house.
Joel is survived by his wife Janet; his children Kelly Sullivan (husband David), Mark Long (wife Lisa), Barbara Hook (husband Mike); his sister Joyce Long; four grandchildren; and four great grandchildren. He is predeceased by his brothers Freddie and Donald Long, and his grandson Ryan Sullivan.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Anchor Baptist Church for the "Joel Long Memorial Fund" which will assist the youth in doing Christian ministries during the summer.
