Larry Stephen
Murphy
September 1, 2024
Larry Stephen Murphy, 81, of Murrells Inlet passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his family on Sunday, September 1st. Born in Kannapolis, N.C. to the late Osie Lee Murphy and Sarah Pennell Murphy, Larry was one of thirteen children. With his wife Edith McDonald Murphy, Larry moved to Murrells Inlet in 1974 where they raised their two children Matthew Stephen Murphy and Katonya Michelle "Shelly" Murphy. He was a beloved member of the Murrells Inlet community. Larry was one of the original charter members of the Murrells Inlet/Garden City Rescue Squad and was a Deputy with the Georgetown County Sheriff's Department for several years. He was a member of Belin Methodist Church where he sang in the choir, and he spent years investing his time in the youth of Murrells Inlet by coaching the recreational baseball teams. Larry had a passion for music, and played bass guitar, starting professionally at age 16. His love of music, family, and fishing was evident to everyone that knew him.
In addition to his parents, Larry was predeceased by 9 sisters and brothers. Left to cherish his memory forever are his loving wife, Edith "Edie" Murphy, his son Matthew Murphy and his wife Tiffany, his daughter, Shelly Murphy and her partner Shawn, three grandchildren, Mycaila Smith, David Murphy, and Kaitlyn Murphy, three sisters, Gayle Stack, Willaree McDuffie, and Vivian Murphy, and several nieces and nephews and their families. Larry's memory will live on forever through his family and friends and his presence will be missed by all.
A Creekside celebration of life will be held at the cross behind Belin Methodist Church on Saturday, September 14th, at 1pm. The family will receive visitors at the Murrells Inlet Community Center following the service. Larry loved to wear his best tropical/Hawaiian themed shirts when he played music. In honor of this tradition, the family is encouraging guests to wear Hawaiian shirts or tropical themed outfits to the service as a final tribute to Larry and his love of playing music.
