Mark Lane Johnson, 66, of Myrtle Beach, SC, passed away peacefully on June 4, 2025. Born on February 3, 1959, in Bluefield, West Virginia, Mark was raised in Tazewell, Virginia, before making Surfside Beach his home for the past 40 years.
A man of many talents and endless energy, Mark spent his life pursuing a variety of passions and careers. He began as a sports writer, sharing his love of fishing and racing through the written word. Over the years, he also owned and operated several businesses, including a landscaping company and a local ice cream and coffee shop. Most recently, he worked as an insurance agent at the family's insurance agency, where he formed lasting relationships with his clients. He was deeply respected and appreciated by those he served, and his genuine passion for helping others shone through in everything he did. Mark also served his community with dedication and pride as a member of the Surfside Beach Town Council for 12 years.
Mark lived life with a smile. He had a deep love for fishing, singing, traveling, beach days, and cheering on the Clemson Tigers. His kindness, quick wit, and warm presence made him a friend to many and a joy to be around.
Mark faced health challenges in his later years, and his family remembers not only those struggles but also the deep love, laughter, and light he brought into their lives.
He is survived by his two daughters, Hilary Haines (Stanley), Elisabeth Funderburk (Rhett) and a son, Bobby Milligan; eight cherished grandchildren – Marcus, Waylon, Cecelia, Sophia, Olivia, Beckett, Easton & Asher; a beloved sister, Barbara Johnson; and his former spouse, Carrie Johnson. He was preceded in death by his parents.
A celebration of Mark's life will be held on July 1st at 2:00 PM at Tabernacle Church, 530 Azalea Dr N, Surfside Beach, SC. All who knew and loved him are welcome to attend and share in honoring his memory.
