Obituary

Portia Hardee Cornwell, born October 26, 1949, was the daughter of the late Preacher Crance and Kathleen Hardee. She grew up in Loris, SC, in the Oakdale community where she was a member of Oak Dale Baptist Church. She was a graduating member of the Loris High School Class of 1968, where she was voted "wittiest" by her fellow class members.

Portia chose nursing as her profession. Early on it became obvious this was a divine calling as she displayed exemplary professionalism in carrying out the details inherent in her job.

Always a nurse "on the job", she immediately jumped into action on vacation in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, several years ago, as she sensed an elderly gentleman on an island excursion in cardiac distress.

She accompanied the man and his wife when the Red Cross Rescue met the group and airlifted him to a hospital for care. This gentleman, who was from New York City, located her several months later, thanked her for her caring compassion; and honored her with an impressive gift card.

Portia was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Courtney Cornwell; a grandchild; and a brother, Terry H. Hardee.

Portia is survived by a daughter, Nikki Leigh Clark, of the home; seven grandchildren who were the focus and joy of her life; four sisters: her twin, Paula Fish of Angier, NC, Gloria Humburg of Des Moines, IA, Georgia Floyd of Olanta, SC, and Denise Carter of Longs, SC; one brother Kenny Hardee of Hickory, NC; and a host of other family and friends.

Services will be held Saturday 2/4/2023 at 2pm with visitation prior from 1-2pm at Mt. Leon Baptist Church in Longs, SC. 9801 Bear Grass Rd E. Longs SC 29568.
