Richard Dennis
Lippman
February 1, 1946 – May 15, 2026
Beloved Husband, Father, Teacher, Friend + Music Lover
Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Richard Dennis Lippman passed away peacefully on Friday May 15, 2026 at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center. He is survived by his daughter Stephanie Lippman and her partner James Duff of New York, NY, as well as a host of relatives, friends and many students that he taught over his 30 years of teaching in Washington D.C. and Maryland schools.
Richard was born to Irving and Edythe Lippman (nee Rosen) on February 1, 1946 in Brooklyn, NY. He moved with his parents and his sister Linda to Maryland in 1959. He graduated from Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring, MD and earned a BA in History from the University of Maryland College Park. He earned his Master's Degree in Higher Education from George Washington University.
He went on to teach Gifted & Talented Education, US History, Civics, US Geography, Humanities, SAT Prep, and Tax Prep at several schools in the area, including- Woodson Junior High and Roper Junior High. Also, over the years, he worked at race tracks- Freestate and Rosecroft, and worked his way up to Management at Laurel Park and Pimlico Raceways during the summer seasons.
Richard met his wife, Mary (nee Roundtree- deceased in 2022) while teaching at Kelly Miller Junior High School and married in 1972- 5 years after interracial marriage became legal in the USA. They were the third interracial couple married in the state of Virginia and they integrated their first apartment’s building, The Riverhouse in Arlington. They started their family in Columbia, Maryland with the addition of their daughter Stephanie and their many fur and fish babies. They happily lived in Columbia for 30 years. They retired to their dream home that Mary designed, furnished and decorated in Plantation Lakes, Myrtle Beach, SC in 2005. They renewed their vows in 2022 in Lake Tahoe, NV, on their 50th wedding anniversary.
Richard was the first Secretary on the board at Plantation Lakes and a very outspoken member of the community. He was a very politically active liberal in South Carolina- he volunteered as a poll worker, attended democratic groups and No Kings rallies. He was often the one that family, friends and former students consulted to understand what was happening politically.
His bond and love for Mary, Stephanie and all of their dogs was exceptionally deep. He enjoyed Doo-Wop, R&B/Soul and Rock music, as well as baseball, college basketball and chocolates. He was known as "Rich" to many, and as he would say, "Rich - everybody wants to be me!" He will be sorely missed and fondly remembered.
Should you like to make a donation in his memory, please give to City of Hope for cancer and diabetic research and patient care.
