Robert "Bob" Walters of Myrtle Beach, SC, passed away unexpectedly on January 23, 2022. Bob was born in Corning, NY on September 14, 1938. He joined the United States Air Force at age 17 and served for four years primarily in France before transferring to the United States Navy where he served his country for an additional 20 years. While in the Navy Bob was assigned to destroyers where he participated in multiple tours of duty from the Cuban Missile Crisis to the Vietnam War and Gemini/Apollo space capsule recovery. Bob retired as Senior Chief Petty Officer (FTCS). After his time in the military Bob and Sherry started a small farm in Smithville Flats, NY, where they enjoyed gardening and raising various animals (and kids) and enjoyed a variety of unique and memorable experiences. During these nine wonderful years Bob also worked with Singer Link in Conklin, NY, where he traveled to various other countries teaching them how to use and maintain military flight simulators. After retirement Bob and Sherry (his wife of 56 years) traveled the country spending many years in Florida and the Florida Keys before finally settling in Myrtle Beach.
Bob was a beloved husband, father and grandfather and was known to his grandchildren, who adored him, simply as Boboo (Bob-boo). Bob enjoyed spending time with family and stayed active throughout retirement. Bob and Sherry were active members of the Coastal Ski and Outing Club where they enjoyed the company of many friends and adventures. Bob was also a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), as well as the American Legion and Moose Club.
Bob is survived by his wife Sherry, his daughter Debbie Winsor (Keith), Scranton, PA; his son Richard W. Walters (Victoria), Charleston, WV; five grandchildren (Megan, Kayla, Travis, Caitlyn and Ryan) and three great-grandchildren; his brother Richard W. Walters (Mary), Howard, NY; his sister Marleen Heskell, Savona, NY, and countless nephews and nieces.
A Memorial service will be held at the VFW Post 10420 from 2 pm - 4 pm on Friday January 28, 2022. Family and friends are welcome to stop by at any time to pay their respects, an Honor Guard presentation by the American Legion Honor Guard will take place at 3:30 pm. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the VFW Post 10420 and/or American Legion Post 178.
