Ruth Cope
German
June 28, 2023
Ruth Cope German passed away peacefully on June 28, 2023, in Murrell's Inlet, South Carolina.
Ruth was born in 1934 to Laura and Melvin Cope in Mingo County, West Virginia, the third of five children. She learned the value of hard work growing up on the bank of the Tug Fork River. She once nearly drowned as a young girl when a local boy, Jack Robinette, pulled her from the water. They were married in 1952.
Over the next 38 years, Ruth and Jack lived in West Virginia, North Carolina, Texas, Alabama, Illinois, Ohio, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. They had two sons: Michael was born in 1953, and Scott was born in 1964.
Ruth was teaching home economics at Dulaney High School in Timonium, Maryland, in the early 1970s when she started taking groups of her students on month-long fashion tours of Europe each summer. She traveled throughout the world the rest of her life.
After moving to Pittsburgh in 1975, Ruth became a stock broker during a time when few women worked in that industry. Applying her family work ethic to investment in financial markets, she enriched many clients for many years.
In 1997, Ruth married Robert German. When they lost fondness for Pittsburgh's winters, they retired to warmer climates, splitting time between Murrell's Inlet and Longboat Key, Florida.
Ruth is survived by her sister, Lu (Jack) Craig of Murrell's Inlet, SC; her brother Luther (Barbara) Cope of Scott Depot, WV; her son, Scott Robinette of Harrisburg, PA; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and more friends than can be counted.
Plans for a memorial gathering will be announced in the near future. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the University of Pittsburgh's Alzheimer's Disease Research Center, or another Alzheimer's Disease research charity.
