Samuel Dewitt
Burns
January 30, 1953 – July 27, 2021
Samuel Dewitt Burns (Sam), 68, died at Compass Rehabilitation Center in Conway, South Carolina on July 27, 2021 after a long battle with Parkinson's disease. Born in Camden, South Carolina January 30, 1953, he was the son of the late Bill Burns and the late Margaret Van Landingham.
Sam grew up in El Paso, Texas and was a graduate of Irvin High School. He also attended the University of Texas at El Paso. Sam's love for South Carolina drew him back to Myrtle Beach from Texas in the 80's where he worked as a delivery driver for Frito Lay. He worked hard delivering chips up and down the Grand Strand and many that knew him called him "The Chip Man." Sam was a hard-working, generous, ethical, Southern gentleman who loved his family and GOLF. His humor and character made every gathering a great time. He loved the outdoors and spent many hours playing golf and walking the beaches of South Carolina searching for the perfect shell.
Sam leaves behind his brother, Vance Burns of Florida, and sister, Melissa Burns of Hunt, Texas, nieces Allison Billet of Pennsylvania, Meg Burns of Florida, cousins Maureen Schultz of New York, Sloan Gray of Bluffton, South Carolina, Brian Monaghan of New York, John McLeod of Austin, Texas, Lewis McLeod of El Paso, Texas and Kelly McLeod of Dallas, Texas. His grandparents and parents preceded him in death.
Sam's struggled with Parkinson's for the past several years with dignity, grace, and humor and charmed all of the nurses he encountered. The family would like to thank Garden Manor of Murrells Inlet, Compass Rehabilitation of Conway, South Carolina, all of Sam's village in Texas, and a VERY special thanks to Reagan Callaghan of Elder Advocates of South Carolina who was an angel on earth to Sam and our family.
Funeral services will be held at a later date at Quaker Cemetery in Camden, South Carolina. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations in his honor be made to Camp Honey Creek, P.O. Box 140, Hunt, TX 78024, The Parkinson's Foundation, or The First Tee Coastal Carolinas.
