Susan Shaffer Arentsen (née Bertram), 85, of Pawley's Island, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on June 30, 2024. Born in Woodsfield, Ohio, on September 3, 1938, she was the daughter of the late William J. Bertram and Lauretta Shaffer Bertram.
She graduated from West Virginia University in 1960 where she served as President of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. She received a Master's Degree in Education from W.V.U. in 1962. Her professional life was dedicated to shaping young minds, first as a mathematics teacher in Columbus, Ohio, and then as a guidance counselor at York High School in Elmhurst, Illinois.
Susan retired to Pawleys Island with her husband Albert Arentsen in 1994. Susan was a member of St. Paul's Waccamaw Methodist Church. Known for her kindness and generosity, Susan was also known for her flair for fashion. She cherished the company of her family, friends, neighbors, and her beloved dogs. Beyond her personal engagements, she remained involved in intellectual pursuits as a member of the Senior Scholars organization in Georgetown, South Carolina. Susan displayed a passion for the natural world through her paintings, a pursuit she continued to enjoy while a resident at The Lakes of Litchfield where she resided for the past 2 years.
In passing, Susan joins her late husband, Albert Arentsen, and her parents. She is survived by her daughter, Amy Cunningham; granddaughter, Hanlen Cunningham; son, Mark Cunningham and his husband, Ken Tattersall; stepdaughter, Jill Martin and her husband, Nick; stepson, James Arentsen and extended family.
Susan was first and foremost devoted to her husband, children, granddaughter and step children. The family of Susan Arentsen invites those who knew her to remember a life well lived with purpose and caring. Her memory will be honored by all those whose lives she enriched
through her work, her spirit, and her devotion.
A celebration of Susan's life for her family, friends and neighbors will be planned for this fall in Pawleys Island. The family requests any thoughtful donations be made to All 4 Paws Animal Shelter in Pawleys Island, SC. www.all4pawssc.org
